Sort images by color on your Mac
Finder sorts by name, date and size, but not by the colors inside your images. Zoomosaic re-sorts a whole folder by color in one click, or splits it into color families: red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue, purple, pink, light, gray and dark.
Color is how designers, marketers and photographers often remember images: the blue banner, the warm sunset series, the black-and-white set. Sorting by color turns a folder into a gradient you can scan in seconds, makes off-palette images stand out, and helps build moodboards and color-consistent selections.
Zoomosaic measures each image's dominant color — a hue histogram weighted by saturation and brightness — along with its average color and how colorful it is. Colorful images are ordered by hue and then lightness; muted and black-and-white images are treated as neutrals and placed at the end, from light to dark.
How to do it
- Drop the folder onto Zoomosaic. Colors are analysed in the background as images load.
- Open the Sort menu and choose Color. The images animate into hue order.
- For separate groups, open the Group menu and choose Color Family. Each family becomes an island with its name and image count.
- Click a family's title to zoom in. Select an image to see its average and dominant colors in the inspector.
- Pick the ones you want with P, then copy them to a folder or ⌥-drag them into your design app.
Tips
- Judge color on a neutral background: choose middle gray, light gray or white in Settings › Canvas.
- Group by Folder and sort by Color to see each subfolder as its own gradient.
- Sorting changes only the canvas. Files are never renamed or moved.
Questions and answers
Can Finder or Photos sort pictures by color?
No. Finder can sort by name, kind, date, size and tags, and Photos by date, but neither looks at the colors inside images. Zoomosaic adds color as a sort order without touching your files.
How are black-and-white images sorted?
Images with little color are grouped as neutrals and sorted from light to dark after the colorful ones, so they don't scatter across the rainbow.
Is sorting by color free?
Yes. Every sort, group and layout in Zoomosaic is free, with no limit on the number of images.
