Zoomosaic

Find duplicate and similar images on your Mac

Exports, resized copies, re-saves and small edits pile up in every project folder. Zoomosaic groups near-identical images into sets so the repeats sit side by side — free, and entirely on your Mac.

Exact-duplicate finders compare file bytes, so they miss the copies that cause the most trouble in real projects: the same picture exported at another size, saved as PNG instead of JPEG, slightly cropped or color-corrected.

Zoomosaic compares what images look like instead. Each image gets a perceptual fingerprint and a color profile, and images that look nearly the same are grouped into a Similar Set. Every set is visible at once on the canvas, so you decide which version to keep with the whole picture in front of you.

How to do it

  1. Drop the folder onto Zoomosaic, or choose File › Open. Subfolders are included.
  2. Open the Group menu in the toolbar and choose Similar Sets. Near-identical images move into numbered sets, largest first; images without a match go to Unique.
  3. Click a set's title to zoom to it. Press Space to see one image large and ⌘1 to check actual pixels.
  4. Press P on the version you keep and X on the others.
  5. Choose Move Rejected Images to Trash…, or filter to Picked and copy the keepers to a clean folder.

Tips

  • Looking for look-alikes rather than strict duplicates? Sort by Visual Similarity: the whole wall is ordered so similar images end up next to each other.
  • Group by Same Dimensions to spot one asset delivered at several sizes.
  • Moving to the Trash can be undone from Finder. Zoomosaic never deletes files on its own.
  • Finding duplicates is free. Deleting or copying one image at a time is always free, and your first 500 images in batch actions are too.

Questions and answers

Does it find duplicates with different names or formats?

Yes. Matching is based on image content, so a JPEG and a PNG of the same picture, or copies with different file names, land in the same set.

Does it find exact byte-for-byte copies?

Exact copies look identical, so they are grouped too. Zoomosaic is built for visual review rather than checksum comparison: it shows you each set and lets you decide.

Are my photos uploaded for analysis?

No. Fingerprints and colors are computed on your Mac and cached locally. Nothing is sent anywhere.

How many images can it check?

Folders with tens of thousands of images work. The first open analyses every image; later opens use the cache and are much faster.
